Outstanding Authorization - FAQ

An outstanding authorization is when a merchant places a hold on a certain amount of funds on your card in order to verify that you have sufficient funds to pay for the transaction. Due to this, your funds may be unavailable to you for several days even if the merchant declines the transaction.

Some merchants' agreements with Mastercard allow them to pre-authorize smaller or larger amounts than the expected transaction. If your final charge is less than the pre-authorized amount, then the remaining funds will be released once the transaction is settled by the merchant.

Gas Station Tip: In the U.S., gas stations may place pre-authorization holds for $75 or even higher amounts when you pay at the pump. You may be able to avoid an excess hold of funds on your card if you pay for the gas inside the station, and specify the exact amount you intend to purchase.
