3D Secure Verification for Card Transactions - FAQ

3D Secure is a security protocol aimed at reducing card fraud by providing an additional layer of security when making online purchases using credit/debit/prepaid cards. It has been adopted by the major card companies, including Mastercard.

When required due to security or regulatory guidelines, you will be provided with one or more challenges to verify that it is really you making the purchase. For example, a challenge can be entering a one-time verification code that you receive via email or text message.

It’s important to understand that not all of your card purchases will require 3D Secure verification. You will only be provided with 3D Secure challenges when required due to security or regulatory guidelines. For example, if your online purchase is made in a domain governed by Europe’s PSD2 regulations, 3D Secure will be used.

We ask you to verify your purchase to make sure it is really you making the purchase and not someone else posing as you or who has stolen your card number.

There are cases where asking you to verify your purchase is required due to regulation and there are other cases where it is due to other factors such as the amount involved or suspicion of fraudulent activity.

Keep in mind that you are not asked to verify your purchase because you are a suspected fraudster, but rather to protect you from fraudulent use of your card without your knowledge.

Purchase verification is triggered based on various factors, such as security or regulatory requirements, amount of the purchase, or suspicion of fraudulent activity.

When 3D Secure purchase verification is triggered, you will be presented with the purchase verification flow. This flow differs, depending on the issuer of your Payoneer Prepaid Mastercard. Your card issuer is printed on the back of your card. You can also check who the card issuer is by going to Payoneer Cards in your Payoneer account, selecting the card, and reviewing the issuer details listed at the bottom of the card details screen.

  • If your Payoneer Prepaid Mastercard is issued by FCB (First Century Bank): You will be asked to enter a one-time verification code that we send you. You’ll be able to choose to have the code sent to your email address or to your mobile phone either via text message or call. The email address and mobile number listed are based on the information stored in your Payoneer account (in your Profile Settings).

  • If your Payoneer Prepaid Mastercard is issued by PEL (Payoneer Europe Limited): You will be asked to enter a one-time verification code that we send you. You’ll be able to choose to have the code sent to your mobile phone either via text message or call. The mobile number listed is based on the information stored in your Payoneer account (in your Profile Settings). After entering the one-time verification code, you’ll be asked to enter your Payoneer personal security passcode. This is a 6-digit code issued to you by Payoneer, and which remains the same for every purchase. You can view or change your personal security passcode from your Payoneer security settings.

The one-time verification code is a unique code that is generated on the fly when a purchase requires verification. You’ll be able to choose how to receive the code, and once received you’ll be required to enter it to approve the purchase.

If a wrong code is entered too many times, your card may be blocked. If this occurs, contact us.

Check that your email and phone number are up to date. If necessary, update your details in your Payoneer account, in Profile Settings.

We strongly recommend that the primary phone number listed in your Payoneer account is a mobile number.

If your information is up to date and you are not receiving codes to your mobile phone or email, there may be a temporary network problem preventing the proper sending of the code. In this case, try making your purchase again a little later. If the problem persists, contact us.

The personal security passcode is a permanent 6-digit code issued to you by Payoneer. You can view or change your personal security passcode from your Payoneer security settings. Note that you are only issued one personal security passcode per Payoneer account. If you have multiple Payoneer cards in your account, you use the same personal security passcode for all of them.

When a purchase made using a card issued by PEL (Payoneer Europe Limited) requires verification, after being asked for a one-time verification code, you’ll also be asked to enter your personal security passcode to approve the purchase.

If a wrong code is entered too many times, your card may be blocked. If this occurs, contact us.

Note: Your personal security passcode is not the same as your card’s PIN code, which you use for ATM withdrawals, etc.

If an incorrect code is entered too many times, we may be required to block your card for security reasons. If a fraudster is trying to make a purchase with your card, blocking the card may help prevent the card from being used fraudulently.

If your card is blocked for any reason, contact us. If it was you making the purchase, we’ll unblock your card. If the card was being used fraudulently, we will cancel the card and issue you a new one.

Depending on the reason for failure you can either try your purchase again at a later time or contact us for assistance. You’ll receive on-screen prompts during the purchase verification flow that advise you how to proceed.

contact us. If it was you making the purchase, we’ll unblock your card. If the card was being used fraudulently, we will cancel the card and issue you a new one.

Although we recommend adding a mobile phone number as the primary number in your Payoneer account, if you only have a landline you can still receive your one-time verification code:

  • Cards issued by PEL (Payoneer Europe Limited) – choose the option to receive the code by call

  • Cards issued by FCB (First Century Bank) – choose the option to receive the code by email or call

To view or change your personal security passcode:

  1. In Payoneer, go to Security Settings and locate the Personal security passcode setting. You’ll see your personal security passcode, masked for security reasons.
  2. Click View/Change and verify it’s you by entering the one-time code we send you.
  3. Once the passcode is visible, you can copy it to your clipboard or choose to change it.
  4. If you change it, click Save to save the change.

Tip: Memorize the passcode so you don’t need to perform the above steps each time you are required to enter it when using your card to make purchases.

No. The purchase verification flow using 3D Secure is presented when required for security or regulatory reasons and it’s not possible to opt out of it.
